In simple terms, “Democracy”, expresses the ideas of “equality” and the “greater good”, and fair laws.  The three principles of Liberty, Equality and Fraternity, or brotherhood, are the basis for our U.S. government and its laws.  When young children acquire this vocabulary as they experience growing up, they become more familiar with how they can take part in expressing and participating in democracy in their daily lives.

“I Am All-in-all”

It is so important for little children (and adults) to know that they are safe.  We cannot always depend on the things around us, a job, the neighborhood, the government, the climate, but we can go inside our minds and hearts and listen quietly to find our safe place.  Within our hearts, we can feel peace and gentleness and love.  We can do this during storms outside or when close friendships seem shaky.  We can always feel the love and peace and safety from within.

This song came to me while I was driving to a meeting.  I had not been able to sing for a while.  As I sang the first verse several times, I kept adding on to it.  By the time I got to my meeting, I was happily singing all the verses and chorus.  When I transcribed it from my notes, I was led to add the chant and fingerplay.

“I Can Hold the Violin”

100_1818    100_1786Here are a couple of my favorite photos of children in all my pre-school classes learning how to hold the violin!  Everyone learned, from the youngest to the Kindergartners.

“I Can Hold the Violin”

In five easy steps, you can hold the violin.  And in three easy steps, you can hold the bow.  Then what?  Play six beginning violin sounds.  Learn the names of the four strings.  Place each finger on each string.  There are Music Reading Readiness symbols for each sound, and Composing Cards so you and your child can create your own original musical patterns.
